Professor Smith and Dr Rahman over the last 20 years have established a clinical and scientific research group based at University College London, specialising in gastrointestinal and oral inflammatory diseases.

Laboratory based research is coupled with clinical studies conducted at University College Hospital London NHS Foundation Trust and the Royal Free Hospital NHS Foundation Trust.

The research team employ a wide range of technologies, from genetic models and transcriptomics to microbiome profiling.
